How To Train Dogs

Ascertaining the Leadership to the Dogs

Understanding the natural state of a dog as a pack animal is necessary before you proceed on training your dog. Being a pack animal it needs a herd leader for fallowing. We should first understand what its means to be a pack animal.

Dogs in their natural habitat live as a group and select one of them as a leader of that habitat and fallow them and subordinate themselves to the leader.

The dogs once domesticated do not travel in packs. Instead they assume our family member as their pack and you as the leader of that pack. This naturally makes them obedient to you and fallow your instructions and will naturally look for you for guidance and always show their instinct to learn from you. This natural affinity gives you an opportunity to establish you as the pack leader and make the task much easier.

There are several things that you can emulate to ascertain yourselves as the leader of the pack and these techniques will make your dog understand his rightful place in your family which will make them more amenable to your training. You can not simply become a leader by bossing over them aggressively which oversimplification of your task and do not always communicate to your dog that you are the pack leader. A good trainer always understands this and takes specific actions to ascertain him as the leader.

While preparing to go outside do not allow him to dash outside before you. Make him to wait while get ready and as him to sit for you to put the leash on and go out and call him to come behind you. Again when you prepare his morning breakfast make him wait for your command to get on. Do not allow him to dash on the food bowl.

Play Time Training

And then at the play time when the dog comes with a toy give a command of your choice like go get the ball, chase or the like and if he obeys keep playing. If the dog ignores your command just leave them alone and stop playing. Do not repeat the command or even reprimand them for ignoring your command. Just walk away out of the place and come back after some time. He may start jumping, whining to catch your attention. Do not heed and just ignore and go away and come back later only when it stops his attention seeking behavior. This will teach them that you are not happy with their disobedience and he will not anything out by doing so.

Consistent training command and schedules

Always try and establish clear and consistent command techniques. Use always the same command for similar jobs. Do not change your inhibitions. For example you allow them to sit in the sofa and the next day you scold them for sitting in the sofa. This would create confusion and may cause disobedience. Sometimes the dog may try and push the established behavioral norm just test your consistency. By allowing them to do what they like, you will make them to doubt your position as a leader.

Being a good owner

A leader is not always respected just for being the boss in the system and it is earned by the acts and qualities of the leader. A firm but fair and understanding bosses are the most admired one. A dog also understands these qualities of the master and hence we should be understanding and be passionate with them always.

The dogs are always on the look out for ways to interact with to reinforce their need to establish their position in the family. Always maintain eye contact with them while training as they will try to take cues from your eyes. Start demanding the dog’s attention during the course of the training like asking him to stand and look at you during walking.
